WHEREAS, there are over 60,000 persons in Florida on any given night who are homeless and have no place of their own to sleep; and

WHEREAS, homelessness can affect everyone but especially families, children, our military veterans, persons with mental illness, persons with disabilities, and those persons with substance problems; and

WHEREAS, homelessness creates a large demand on the state's social and economic resources; and

WHEREAS, government programs alone have been unable to solve the problem; and

WHEREAS, the causes of homelessness are numerous and complex, requiring individually tailored services; and

WHEREAS, the solution of the issue of homelessness requires that all citizens become involved in helping their neighbors in need through the donation of their time, talents and resources; and

WHEREAS, it is important that all of the residents of the State of Florida are given the opportunity to be safely housed and healthy;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Charlie Crist, Governor of the State of Florida, do hereby extend greetings and best wishes to all observing January 2008 as Help the Homeless Month.
