Procolamation

WHEREAS, the mission of the Help the Homeless Program is to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness and to increase the number of resource organizations working to prevent and end homelessness. The Help the Homeless Program fosters volunteerism in service to homeless people and those at risk of becoming homeless; and

 

WHEREAS, there are over 754,000 men, women, and children throughout the United States that are living on the streets, staying in shelters, or living in transitional housing. Currently there are an estimated 1,300 people homeless throughout Pasco County; and

 

WHEREAS, Journey Village Pasco, to open in April 2008, will be a transitional housing center and a place of assistance to those in need of a "hand up" or a chance to get back on their feet. Journey Village Pasco will offer social services and job assistance to help homeless individuals transition into mainstream society while providing a safe place to stay; and

 

WHEREAS, during the month of January, Pasco County residents are encouraged to donate their time and skills, along with monetary donations, to support local homeless projects.

 

NOW THEREFORE, I, W. Cliff McDuffie by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Zephyrhills proclaim the month of January, 2008 as HELP THE HOMELESS MONTH to encourage citizens to help put an end to homelessness.
